Konnichiwa, Hello~ I am mi 😆

As you know Tokyo is capital prefecture in Japan. Manyyyy people are living there. Today I’m going to write about this busy town, Tokyo.

I have lived in Tokyo for about 8 years and been to lots of places. I pick 14 places that you should visit in Tokyo!

Where is Tokyo??

Tokyo is located in the center of Japan. There are a lot of people and buildings, but Tokyo is not really big size. The population is about 14 million, the size of Tokyo is 2193 ㎢. The population is the most in Japan, but the size is the third smallest in Japan!! Tokyo has a very high population density.

I think you can enjoy Tokyo in 3 days. If you want to go to Tokyo Disney Resort, you need 1 or 2 more days. (Actually Tokyo Disney Resort is located in Chiba prefecture, next to Tokyo.) I already introduced Disney Resort in another article.

14 places you should visit in Tokyo!!

Asakusa 浅草

Asakusa is a historical city like Edo city. You can see the temple called “Senso-ji 浅草寺” via the famous road called “Nakamise-dori 仲見世通り“. There is the signature gate called “Kaminari-mon 雷門” in the entry of Nakamise-dori. I recommend to take pictures in front of Kaminari-mon and then walk in Nakamise-dori and buy something sweet. Then you can see Senso-ji forward. Take a smoke from the incense burner called “Jokouro 常香炉” in front of Senso-ji. According to legend, if we take a smoke, our bad part of body is getting better. Let’s try it!

Tokyo Sky Tree 東京スカイツリー

Tokyo Sky Tree is the tallest radio tower in the world!! The height of this tower is 634 m. You can go to the observation deck. It costs 1,000 JPY~3,400 JPY depending on the part of the deck. There is also commercial facility “Soramachi ソラマチ” around Tokyo Sky Tree. You can go shopping, buy souvenirs, eat meals, go to Sumida aquarium, the planetarium, and the post museum.

Akihabara 秋葉原

Akihabara is famous for Otaku culture and electrical shops. Do you know Otaku culture?? Otaku is kind of a geek, especially an anime or idol buff. There are many anime shops and maid cafes where the waitresses dressed in cute maid costumes. In front of maid cafes, many waitresses wearing the costume invite customers. Can you imagine it? haha

Tokyo station 東京駅

We would say Tokyo station is the main and biggest station in Tokyo. There are a lot of train lines and also Shinkansen lines. That’s why I recommend to stay here during Tokyo trip. It’s easy to go everywhere. The appearance of Tokyo station is beautiful (similar to Flinders street station in Melbourne). Around Tokyo station, lots of office buildings are located, so in the morning and evening, this station is crowded with businessmen. There are many shops and restaurant near Tokyo station, you can buy souvenirs and eat Japanese food. You can visit the imperial palace in 15 min walk from here as well.

Shinjuku 新宿

The number of users of Shinjuku station is the most in Japan!! It means this is the busiest station in Japan. There are always too many people. Around Shinjuku station, there are lots of cloth shops, restaurants, and department stores. You can walk to the national garden “Shinjuku Gyoen 新宿御苑” as well.

You can enjoy the night life at down town “Kabuki-cho 歌舞伎町“. There are many Izakaya, Karaoke, cinema, adult shops, hotels and so on.

Shibuya 渋谷

Shibuya is also too crowded everyday. Shibuya scramble crossing is very famous. Many foreigners are taking photos or videos. There are a lot of shopping centers, cafes, karaoke, and restaurants. “Shibuya Center Gai 渋谷センター街” is the famous road in which many shops located. There are also some night clubs, which are for young people such as until early 20s though.

On Novenber 2019, Shibuya Scramble Square 渋谷スクランブルスクエア has opened. There are lots of shops and sky deck “Shibuya Sky 渋谷スカイ”.

Harajuku  原宿

Harajuku station is next to Shibuya station. Around Harajuku station, there is the most trendy road called “Takeshita-dori 竹下通り“. I can say Harajuku is the center town of the trend. From elementary school students to adults can enjoy shopping and eating at fancy cafes. You can walk to the shurine  “Meiji-jingu 明治神宮” and the big park “Yoyogi kouen 代々木公園” from Harajuku station as well.

Takeshita-dori

Ikebukuro 池袋

Ikebukuro station is the second busiest station in Japan!! Around Ikebukuro station, there are shopping centers, restaurants, cafes, Izakaya, karaoke, cinemas, an aquarium, and a planetarium. I think this is a good town for hanging out with friends or dating. You can do everything what you want at the large shopping center “Sunshine City” which has many shops, restaurants, cafes, an observation deck, an aquarium, and a planetarium.

Roppongi 六本木

Roppongi is famous for an art and design. Some art museums such as Kokuritsu Shin Art Museum, Mori Art Museum, and Suntory Museum, are located there. “Roppongi Hills 六本木ヒルズ” and “Tokyo Midtown 東京ミッドタウン” are signature buildings with hotels. Bars and night clubs in Roppongi are well known, you can enjoy the night life, too.

Odaiba お台場

There are big shopping centers and amusement parks in Odaiba. If you would like to enjoy shopping and some amusement parks, you need a whole day.

Venus Fort” is a big shopping center like Europe in “Palette town“. Palette town has a ferris wheel, too. “Aqua City Odaiba” and “Diver City Tokyo” are also big shopping centers. “Tokyo Joypolis” is one of the largest indoor theme park in Japan. “Team Lab” is an digital art museum. The large bridge “Rainbow Bridge” is so beautiful at night. Wow so many places to go!

Ueno 上野

There are some big museums, such as National Science Museum, National Museum of Western Art, and also Ueno zoo. You can see a panda in Ueno zoo♡ The shopping street “Ameyoko アメ横” is very unique. I recommend that you go there (with cash). You can buy snacks, seafood, and Asian food.

Ginza 銀座

I think Ginza is the town for rich women? There are many rich brand shops, fancy cafes, and restaurants in Ginza. My mother loves Ginza (just for window shopping?haha). There are also “Kabuki-za 歌舞伎座” in Ginza. Do you know Kabuki? Kabuki is a drama performance with a history of over 400 years. The performers are male actors in peculiar make-up. Kabuki-za is a Kabuki theater. I heard that it’s difficult to understand what the actors say for even Japanese people, because they speak old Japanese.

Ryogoku 両国

Ryogoku is famous for Sumo 相撲. Sumo game hold 3 times in a year(January, May, and September) in Kokuikan 国技館 with a Sumo museum. There is also Edo Tokyo museum 江戸東京博物館 in Ryogoku. You can know the history of Tokyo and see Edo city. Actually I went there many times in the process of getting a curator qualification when I was a university student. I love there because I can learn the history from the model of Edo city clearly.

Toyosu Fish Market 豊洲市場 (moved from Tsukiji Fish Market 築地市場)

Tsukiji Fish Market moved to Toyosu in October 2018.  Actually I haven’t been to Toyosu Fish Market yet, I have to go there soon! Anyway you can eat fresh seafood like Kaisen don and Sushi!! After I go to Toyosu Fish Market, I’ll update this article.

Model plan for 3 days

In one day, you can visit many places in Tokyo by train and walk. You can combine 3 model plans among these options depending on your purpose.

①Akihabara→Tokyo station→Ginza→Roppongi
②Ueno→Sky tree→Asakusa
③Odaiba
④Shibuya→Harajuku→Shinjuku(→Ikebukuro)
⑤Toyosu→Ryogoku

Tips when you travel Tokyo!

I advise some when you travel Tokyo.

You can go everywhere by public transportation like a train and bus.
You don’t need to rent a car. It’s better to search which train you should take in Google Map. The fee is around 130~700 JPY depending on the distance and line. When you get lost, ask somebody walking. I think Japanese will tell you how to go kindly.
You should bring a folding umbrella.
Because it’s often rainy and cloudy in Tokyo. Especially from June to July, Tokyo has a rainy season. Almost everyday is rainy.
It’s better to bring some cash with you.
Still some of shops cannot accept a credit card. If you are a traveler, you should bring at least 10,000JPY cash with you just in case, I suggest.
Wear sneakers!

You will walk for a long time in Tokyo. Your foot will be tired. It’s better to wear the shoes that you get used to.

You can take a taxi easily.
You can see many taxis running on the road. You just raise your hands to a taxi, and then say your destination. At the end of the trip, you pay the fee. Some taxi cannot accept credit card. The fee is around 410 JPY(1km)~3,450 JPY(10km). It’s ok to take a taxi for short distance but if you want to go somewhere far away, it will be very expensive to take a taxi.
How is Tokyo?? It’s an interesting town.
Let’s travel busy Tokyo(=゚ω゚)ノ
